Google Pixel 3 does not read NFC Type 4 tag as in the NFC writable example

Dear Nordic,

We have developed a product utilized the NFC readable/writable feature of NRF52832. We have tested it against some of the HTC, Sony, Samsung, and Google phones. It works for most of them, but not all. We found that Google Pixel 3 and 3 XL (probably also the older model) is having trouble to read the NFC Type 4 tag (Type 2 is OK). This issue can be confirmed with the NRF52 DK with the NFC Writable example. Would you please test and confirm the result and update an analysis result?

Thank you so much for your help, we are about to enter mass production, but we really need to know why some of the phone could not support reading the NFC tag, thank you!

  • Hi

Sorry for the delay, but I've gotten word from our NFC expert now. We have tested your application on the following phones: Nexus 5X, iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy XCOVER 2. And we're not able to find the same problem for any other phones other than specifically the Google Pixel 3 series. As far as we can see, everything is fine with your setup, and we couldn't find any issues in the frame exchange when sniffing the communication using our NFC sniffer.

Seeing as we can't look into proprietary code etc. on the Google Pixel, we have not been able to track down the specific issue, but the issue seems to be with that specific phone, so it seems you'll have to get assistance from Google to find the actual flaw. From what we've been able to find, the problem seems to be "exclusive" to the Google Pixel 3 series, so other phones supporting NFC type 4 tags should not encounter this problem.

    Best regards,

    Simon
