Nrf51822 custom pcb bootloader flashing

Hi I am developing a custom PCB for the nrf51822 chip. I heard the nrf51822 chips do not come with preloaded firmware or bootloader. Do I need to also flash the bootloader first onto the nrf51822 chip before I can test applications. (I know for BLE applications there is SoftDevice stack), but I want to test LED blinky program first. Thanks!

  • Is this for testing during production? If you want to update the firmware of the nRF51 over BLE during testing, then you need to flash the nRF51822 with the bootloader and the S130 SoftDevice.

If the custom PCB is connected to a programmer during testing, then you can flash the blinky example first and then flash the bootloader and softdevice after testing the blinky example.

    Best regards
