Is 2016 package of 32MHz crystal necessary?

From the datasheet of nRF52840, I found the 32MHz crystal's package is 2016 (reference circuit).

Is it necessary? Can I use bigger package?

yes I think that's fine, as long as you follow the spec's listed in the product specification.
