no signal

Hi,

i'm not getting any signal with a fresh DK and the latest modem driver.

AT+CESQ
+CESQ: 99,99,255,255,255,255
OK

entering AT+COPS=?  will make it unresponsive forever. (nordic LTE Link monitor times out, and no AT commands are possible before hard reset).

does not matter which simcard i use. The one i'm testing right now from telekom works just fine in a simcom lte-m modem.

unfortunately the devzone has no way to attach files, so i uploaded the trace file here:

  • Hi a3p,

Which network are you trying to connect to? LTE-M or NB-IoT?

You can switch this by the AT command: xsystemmode

Please share the full output from LTE link monitor.

    Best Regards,

    Martin L.

  • thats with CAT-M1 which i know works with the same sim, same antenna, different modem.

i also tried NB-IOT with the same result.

It does look like you are using an older version than NCS v1.0.0?

Please try to use this precompiled at_client: merged.hex

You can flash it using the programmer app in nrf connect for desktop or by the command line: nrfjprog --program merged.hex -f nrf91 -r --sectorerase --verify

Since you are mentioning "same antenna" are you using an external antenna on the nRF91 DK? Please keep this in mind

Please send a new Log using LTE Link Monitor and just let the application run through the script by sending the AT command: AT+CFUN?

Are you using the iBasis SIM card provided with the kit?

    Best regards,

    Martin L.

  • no, i tried v1.0.0 as well as master

same issue with the hex you provided.

same with external or internal antenna.

same issue with the included iBasis Sim as well as a known working Telekom sim

  • Hi a3p,
How long do you typically wait for a connection?

The first time you do this, it can take up to 3-5 minutes. (and the response from CESQ will show 255 until you get a response from the eNB)

    e.g.

after a successful connection you can store the network data to modem flash by turning OFF the modem completely: AT+CFUN=0

Then if you reboot the kit and turn on the modem you should see that you get a connection much quicker.

  • thanks, thats good to know. i did now test it by waiting 20 minutes with each sim card.

    same result

  • Hi A3p,

In which country are you located?
Did you register the ibasis SIM on nrf cloud?

Could you try to set the command:

    AT%XMODEMTRACE=1,2

before you turn on the modem.

Please provide logs and any additional information you could think is important for me to know.

  • yes, the basis sim is now registered. no change. is the usage of the nrf cloud mandatory?

this is germany/Berlin with good coverage of both LTE and NB-IoT. My telekom sim works fine with a simcom modem, which also gives considerably more debug out if something is wrong.

with the hex file you send me, no traces are collected using the trace collector from  nrfconnect, even when setting

    AT%XMODEMTRACE=1,2

I already attached a trace file earlier. do you need a different one?

when running for a long time, i ocassionally get "

    %CESQ: 255,0
    +CEREG: 2,"FFFE","FFFFFFFF",7

currently i'm assuming that the DK is simply broken, and i ordered a second one.

  • Hi a3p,

I forgot that some networks do not support ePCO, which is most likely the case here.

Please try to the AT command:

    AT%XEPCO=0

    then switch to nb-iot mode,

    AT%XSYSTEMMODE=0,1,0,0

before you turn on the modem (at+cfun=1).
