Choosing the correct BLE Technolog

Hi, 

I'd like the create the following device layout , all nRF52840 :

Device #1 ------> Device #2 -------> Device #3 --------> Device #4 ---------> Gateway----> "Cloud"

A Device needs to report information to the Gateway , the distance from far devices to the gateway maybe too large for direct connection. 

There can be 10's of devices. all reporting to the same gateway ( every 15. minutes ).

Gateway is also nRF52840 with a modem connected over UART. 

Adding a new device, should be a simple process, preferably from a mobile phone. 

I'd seeking for an advice on the best nrf technology to use (mesh? aggregation ? relay ? ) and would appreciate your advice.  

This is for a remote metering reading from tall buildings.

Although the devices does not need to exchange data with each other  ? ( only relay )

Extending the range of the network by relaying data, is one of the main feature of a mesh network. I would recommend to read the Mesh Profil documentation. It's a good read and gives a good overview, of what is possible with mesh.

I agree on this being a god use-case for a mesh network.

If you're familiar IPv6 + UDP networks then I'd suggest Open Thread, otherwise, BLE Mesh is a good fit and easier to set up. 


We also have a Gateway example in our NCS SDK for the nRF91 DK where an nRF9160 gives cloud access to the on-board nRF52840.
