nRF Connect Desktop requires a "BLE Modem" to be connected to the mac itself, since it does not use the mac's BLE capabilities. This modem can be any of the latest devkits/dongles from nordic. Once you have connected a supported device, you will be able to select it in the top left dropdown where it now says "No devices selected".
