Thread certification needed?

If I were to design a product using nRF52840 & Thread.
Normally, I would have to certify the product with the thread group and become a member.

The thing is:
- the product does not need to interoperate with other Thread devices
- it will not need to be advertised as Thread-enabled, won't actually need to mention Thread at all.

Would I still need to certify it with the thread group? Would I still need to become group member, but can I skip the certification?

What would be the case if the product is using Bluetooth or Zigbee?

This probably is more up to the Thread group whether or not they want a product running a compliant stack, but not necessarily being compliant as a product, to possibly connect to and interfer with Thread certified products and networks, I doubt that.

Either way we would want anybody using any of our compliant stacks, be it Thread, Bluetooth and Zigbee to carry out necessary certification, listing or qualification with the respective interest groups, no matter if you slap a sticker on your product or not. Strictly you are reaping the harvests of the development and great work done with each Protocol as much as anyone, it would only be logical if you were to contribute towards further development and interoperability work.

If you want to avoid these fees, we have proprietary radio protocols as well as a 802.15.4 MAC library which you can use without having to worry about certification with any group or organization.
