Why is password 12 characters

The password I was assigned was 8 characters. I am so sick of these sites requiring logins and passwords that can never be remembered and frankly serving no purpose. I have a standard password for these 1000's of forum sites that require such garbage so at least I can remember them. Please be reasonable.

  • Interesting. When I got the email where I could change my password, I tried an 8-character one and I got an error saying it had to be 12 characters. Is that a bug?

  • Hi Brian,

the dialog where you change passwords requires 12 characters, but no special ones.
Iæll note it as a bug that the originally created one is actually 8 characters - it should be 12.

However, there are no requirements for special characters.
The idea with this, is that you can create passwords that are long enough for brute-force resilience, while also being possible to remember.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,

  • The problem is that every forum site requires username and password and often the username has to be unque or email. There are just SO many that when each one has special requirements you try to create one that satisfies them all. Most require a minimum of 8 with one or more special characters, mixed case, or digits. When you finally create this weird password it's really nice to be able to reuse it. If I am absent from this site for several months and need to come back and its NOT stored on the computer, I will never remember what this password was. How many people do you think actually type in the password each time? Probably 0 to none. The computer remembers it. So when you have to actually type one it, you hope one of your standard ones will work.
