I am using the ble_uart example with the nRF52 dev kit. I connect to a windows 10 PC. It connects, but promptly disconnects. What am I doing wrong??

How, exactly, are you "connecting" ?
NUS, as the name suggests, is a proprietary service - it is not a standard adopted by the BT SIG.
Therefore, it is unlikely that Win10 - or anything else - will "just work".
You will probably have to write or find an app that "knows" the NUS ...
nRF Connect will do it ...
As awneil pointed out, Win10 does not support proprietary services so you will need a custom app to interact with it. nRF connect desktop can be used for this, but it requires an extra nordic dev kit or dongle for connectivity. You may try the Bluetooth LE Explorer app in microsoft store if you prefer using the built-in BT chipset on your PC
