thingy 91 PSM global tracking

Dear,

THINGY:91 / nRF91 DK

Currently, Power Saving Mode (PSM) is a feature that is not always available with roaming cards, and we must use the local sim card to use GPS and LTE-M at the same time.

We want global tracking, how can we do it? what kind of SIMcard can we use to have glocal-tracking?

Thanks,

BR,

Hoang Nguyen

  • Hi again.

I've had a word with management about your concern, and I hope this information will be helpful, although it might not be solving the issue at this moment.

Just to be clear, the problem is not that there is a technical limitation anywhere, it's what the different carriers offers the market.

Currently, Power Saving Mode (PSM) is a feature that is not always available with roaming cards, and we must use the local sim card to use GPS and LTE-M at the same time.

That is correct, although it is only correct because the different Mobile Network Operators (MNO) set certain restrictions in their "deals" with the companies that often provide roaming (Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO).

    It basically works like this:

You can either be a MNO or a MVNO, and agree on a roaming deal in your country or another country with a another MNO. The roaming deal includes pricing, data, available features and so on. How good this deal is for each part of it depends on regulations, money, and the consumers. For example, if you use roaming within the EEA and you're from one of the countries in the EEA you pay no extra, that's because it's agreed upon in "The Roaming Regulation 2012".

    But back to your question.

We want global tracking, how can we do it? what kind of SIMcard can we use to have glocal-tracking?

The MNO/MVNO you're using has to be made aware that you're not satisfied with the roaming agreements they have made. You're in essence a customer of the operators because you pay for the data usage, that could be used to tell the operators that you're not satisfied with their products. Questions you can ask the different carriers is their support of PSM, eDRX in idle mode.

So to conclude, I'm not sure which carrier give you the best deal.

I hope this information is helpful.

    Best regards,

    Andreas

  • Thanks so much,

I am in Horten, Norway. I used Telenor LTE-M, it works with PSM well. Then, I tried to check Telia, it does NOT work.

I checked the LTE-M coverage of Telia, it has very bad coverage in my area, it "roamings" to Telenor,

I checked another ticket: "iBasis does not support PSM mode in Norway. You'll need to try with a Telenor or Telia SIM card instead in Norway."  https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/51513/nrf9160-low-power/208816#208816

Telia SIM card does NOT work with me.

    Thanks so much,
