nRF52840 EN 300 328 Receiver Category

Hi!

I was wondering about the Receiver Category of the nRF52840 according to EN 300 328. The device should be classified as a category 1, 2 or 3 receiver, based on the following criteria:

Receiver category 1
Adaptive equipment with a maximum RF output power greater than 10 dBm e.i.r.p. shall be considered as receiver
category 1 equipment.

Receiver category 2
Non-adaptive equipment with a Medium Utilization (MU) factor greater than 1 % and less than or equal to 10 % or
adaptive equipment with a maximum RF output power of 10 dBm e.i.r.p. shall be considered as receiver category 2
equipment.

Receiver category 3
Non-adaptive equipment with a maximum Medium Utilization (MU) factor of 1 % or adaptive equipment with a
maximum RF output power of 0 dBm e.i.r.p. shall be considered as receiver category 3 equipment.

I have not been able to find any information about the Medium Utilization factor of the nRF52840, so if you could help me with this classification that would be highly appreciated!

  • Thank you for your answer!

Is this true even if we have a medium utilization factor below 1%?

  • Hi,

The wording in v2.2.1 is a little different:

    4.2.3.2.2 Receiver category 2
The following equipment shall be categorized as receiver category 2 equipment:
    • non-adaptive equipment with a Medium Utilization (MU) factor greater than 1 % and less than or equal to
10 % (irrespective of the maximum RF output power); or
    • equipment (adaptive or non-adaptive) with a maximum RF output power greater than 0 dBm e.i.r.p. and less
than or equal to 10 dBm e.i.r.p.

    4.2.3.2.3 Receiver category 3
The following equipment shall be categorized as receiver category 2 equipment:
    • non-adaptive equipment with a maximum Medium Utilization (MU) factor of 1 % (irrespective of the
    maximum RF output power); or
    • equipment (adaptive or non-adaptive) with a maximum RF output power of 0 dBm e.i.r.p.

So if your MU<1% and output power <0dBm, then technically yes it can be category 3.

    Best regards,

    Andreas
