Does the nRF52833 dk support direction finding?

Hello,

I want to use BLE direction finding.  In the product brief (https://www.nordicsemi.com/-/media/Software-and-other-downloads/Product-Briefs/nRF52833-DK-PB-10.pdf?la=en&hash=060C386070EE88990541582082DEFBFC080172A4) is written, that direction finding is a key feature from this kit. But when I had a look at the User Guide, nothing is written about BLE direction finding...

With a short look to the pcb, I can't find an antenna array on it which would be necessary to use this feature.

Now I'm confused, whether direction finding is working with this development kit or not?

Could you please tell me, whether it is possible to use it with the kit or what to do, to get it working?

  • Hi Reino,

the nRF52833 SoC supports Direction Finding, but as you have pointed out there is only a single antenna on the nRF52833 DK. Hence, the nRF52833 DK can only be used as a tag, but we do unfortunately not have any software example yet.

We are working on a add-on board with an antenna array and RF switches for our development kits that have a Bluetooth 5.1 SoC as well as the  software algorithm to estimate the angle from the IQ measurements. As far as I know this should be available sometime during the first half of next year. Please contact your local Nordic Regional Sales Manager for a more information on our Direction Finding roadmap.

    Best regards

    Bjørn

  • @Bjørn  I see there is an interest to direction finding, and the main issue is lack of hardware - it's not an easy task to make a good pcb layout of antenna array for most of us. Can I suggest to release an add-on board ASAP with some basic example (AoA transmitter and receiver using plain radio)? Even without compatibility with BLE5.1 for now, having a working proof-of-concept it would be much faster to reach a production stage once SDK and SoftDevice support will be ready.
