Change nRF51822 to patch antenna

Hello everyone,

I'm using nRF51822 development kit to do BLE network experiment. The boards I use are PCA10005 with omnidirectional antenna, and PCA10004 with PCB antenna. According to the experiment, each node should take directional antenna with radio shape of Elevation Beamwidth 70' and Azimuth Beamwidth 70'.

Is there an off-the-shelf patch antenna that can be directly used to replace the nRF51822 PCA10005 antenna? If the above is not possible, is there any approach by which I can create a Elevation-70'-Azimuth-70' radio shape?

Thanks!

  • For almost all of our customers, as close to omnidirectional is what they want in order to accommodate most scenarios. So we have little to no user experience in using patch antennas or directional antennas. There should be solutions out there, but I would have a look at for example wi-fi range extenders or wi-fi point to point solutions. Any 2.4 GHz 50 Ohm single ended antenna would work with our radios too.
