What is the board support package (BSP)?

The board support package seems to be listed as a hardware peripheral in the documentation? This is a new concept to me, that seems to be taken from the linux world as a way to abstract the PCBA.

Are we supposed to be using the bsp module to encapsulate our own hardware layout (e.g. which pins are connected to buttons, etc)?

The idea is to be able to keep a consistent name across multiple kits and board, so that BUTTON1 would be the same across different kits, but the actual pin it's using might be different.

It's a system that works well with our development kit and you could re-use it towards your custom boards as well if you make a board definition for your custom board.
