Implementing Angle of Arrival for high accuracy positioning using the NRF5340 PDK and NRF52811 (with the BMD-360 module)

I am attempting to implement AoA using the nRF5340 Preview development kit and 3 BMD-360 modules with the nrf2811 SoC.

In searching the devzone I see multiple comments from the past year that indicate software support was to come in late 2019.

Has that support come to the SDK and where can I find it?

If not can I get confirmation that an implementation of AoA should be possible with my hardware (one nrf5340 pdk and 3 nrf2811 SoCs)?

  • Hi ReggieMarr,

I am also very interested in BLE direction-finding. As my knowledge, NRF5340 PDK may not support AoA cause it just has 1 antenna. You can review this for more information.

I hope Nordic will release an SDK in a recent time for developers to implement their projects. I also have waited for a long time too :))

This is partly correct, an antenna array is needed to enable AoA RX. This can be connected to the J1 coaxial connector on the DK, and GPIOs of your choice to enable DF using the DK which itself only has 1 antenna. The DK itself can still be used as AoA TX. This is the case for all DKs of ICs that support direction finding.

Our Direction Finding offering is coming along, unfortunately we do not share roadmap information on Devzone so if you want an ETA please reach out to the Nordic Regional Sales Manager in your region. Send me a PM if you need contact information.

    Best regards,

    Andreas
