Where to get the Thingy91 v1.4

Hi Nordic,

I'm trying to get a GPS fix in clear blue sky in the middle of Paris today, but still can't...

Modem firmware: 1.2

Application firmware: thingy91_ltem_dfu_2020-04-29_bc7ade8b.hex

The only data received to the nrf cloud comes from the sensors.

I've seen that the hardware version 1.4 improved the GPS fixing, but where to buy this new Thingy91 please?

Thanks

EDIT: link monitor console says that only 1 satellite is tracked

  • Hi Pierre,
You would need to check with the different distributors which version they have in stock:

    https://www.nordicsemi.com/About-us/BuyOnline?search_token=nRF6943&series_token=nRF9160

When you tested the GPS did you have open sky conditions? e.g. no trees or windows that could block the GPS signals?
I assume you enabled the GPS operation (long press the button for a minimum of 10 seconds).

Would you mind sending the log output?

    Best regards,
    Martin L.

  • Thanks Martin,

Just ordered another one via RS, the datasheet is v1.4, fingers crossed!

Been used to get a fix under 30secs with a Quectel chip... that's why I thought it wasn't working at all.

EDIT: got a fix after 1300 secs:

I've some passive GPS antennas but the connecctor doesn't seem to be a uFL, could you please recommend a compact external antenna compatible with the Thingy91 please?

    EDIT 2:

Got a fix on a hot start after 258 secs, same position & static asset... quite long no?

  • Hi,
Using an GPS antenna with the adapter Murata part no. MXHS83QE3000 mentioned in the documentation: https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/index.jsp?topic=%2Fug_thingy91%2FUG%2Fthingy91%2Fhw_description%2Fhw_gps.html&cp=12_0_5_2_2 then you should be good.

You should see improvements using v1.4.0 or and external GPS antenna.
