nrf9160 dk not connecting to LTE-M network Romania

I've started an asset tracking project at the company that I work at and have tried to use the nrf9160 dev kit for the device tracking part.

I have updated the board firmware (the hex file for the ltem networks) and the modem, downloaded and updated the certificate and added the ibasis sim to the website.

After all that, whenever i try and monitor the board through the LTE Monitor app it goes through this steps:

1. Trying To connect to an LTE network

2. Timed out

3. Starts searching again but only find signal with no network (CESQ command keeps outputting the signal's strength)

4. After that it is timed out again and the Zephyr OS start rebooting and starts searching again for networks

I've waited up to half an hour to see if anything changes in the process, but nothing new comes up.

Another colleague has a nrf9160 as well and he got it to work and transmit data, so it is not a sim problem, since we live in the same city(Cluj-Napoca), and the coverage in Romania is covered by Orange.

I have tried reinstalling drivers, going through the process of updating the framework multiple times, setting the apn manually for ibasis, even using the nbiot app even though there is no coverage for that, but as a reassurance.

Whenever the app is at the stage 3(where it has signal, but no network), the %XMONITOR command returns 4(unknown), otherwise 0.

    This is typically due to wrong certificates or device ID. My guess in this case is the latter, due to the timing of the POLLHUP. It is important that the device is provisioned with certificates that matches the device ID of the device (nrf-<IMEI>). In other workds, certificates for nRF Cloud can not be shared between devices.

    Looking at the at_client log (2020-08-11T07_06_39.657Z-log.txt), the device finds a cell, and tries to connect to it:

    Was the SIM card removed from the device, or somthing similar?

  • The SIM  was not removed at any point during the runs.

    And in the case of the certificates, i checked the IMEI of the .cert file and the one written on the back of the board and they match, I also tried updating the certificate, but to no effect.

    I gave my colleague both devices so he may try again with both this time. I shall come back with any updates on that matter.

    In this case, the device is ready to be added to your (or you collegues) nRF Cloud account.

    Once you have added the device, it might do another reset, but after that, you should be able to see it connect successfully to nRF Cloud, and begin sending data.

  • Yes, you can use any SIM card you want to connect to nRF Cloud.

    nRF Cloud does not really care what SIM card you are using. But since the first thing many people will do when they get a new nRF91DK or Thingy:91 is to connect it to nRF Cloud, having the activation of the SIM card that comes with the device a part of the registration process was a natural solution.

    But, if you have an already activated SIM card, there is a  "Skip this step" button when you are prompted to activate the iBasis SIM  card. The only requirements for the SIM are that it meets the electrical requirements and that it let you connect and send IP data over your local network.
