nrf9160 : Support for CIoT EPS

Hi,

Can you please answer below queries.

1. Do you support CIoT EPS attach without PDN connectivity optimization?
2. Do you support UE Usage Type (HSS and Samsung MME) so that you can have the CIoT connected to Casa MME?
If no, are you planning to use a different PLMN ID for CIoT devices?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi,

I have forwarded your questions to our modem team.

I will let you know when I hear back from them.

    Best regards,

    Didrik

  • I have gotten an answer back from the modem team:

Unfortunately, the answer is no to both your questions.

If no, are you planning to use a different PLMN ID for CIoT devices?

Could you clarify what you mean by this? Our modem team did not understand your question.

  • Thanks , we are checking with our customer who raised the question

Also we would like to know how is the APN configuration done? For one NB-IoT network (Jio,India) we were testing on, we did not have to set it , but we still got cellular connectivity and was able to access our cloud server. On another NB-IoT network(In Malaysia) with the same firmware, we are not able to get cellular connectivity.

  • Hi again.

I discussed your questions with the modem team today. They are wondering why you are asking for these features.

Are you planning to use Non IP Data Delivery and need these features?

You might also want to discuss these features with your Regional Sales Manager. If you do not know how to contact your RSM, send me a private message with your location, and I will provide you the contact information.

Also, could you clarify what you mean with your last question?

Our modem team does not understand how it is related to your other questions.

    Best regards,

    Didrik

  • The initial set of questions were from a cellular network provider checking related to non IP data, but the APN related query that we have is based on our understanding that APN configuration is required for the device to be able to connect to NB-IOT network and we are not sure if that needs to be manually set or does the device gets to know of it while attempting connection? This doubt occurs because like we mentioned, when we tried with SIM for one NB-IoT network (Jio, India) we were able to connect without doing any configuration of APN in our application, but using SIM of another NB-IoT network, it did not connect to the network using the same firmware.

  • Sorry, we seem to have been a bit unlucky with when I loaded the ticket, and when you replied.

What I meant with "your last question" was

If no, are you planning to use a different PLMN ID for CIoT devices?

I had not yet seen your APN related question. Sorry for the confusion.

    To answer your APN question:

The APN is normally provided by the network, so the user does not need to set them manually. Unfortunately, there are exceptions where APN must be configured manually. What SIM card and network did you use in Malaysia?

Was it the same SIM as in India?

Looking at GSMA's CIoT deployment map, it does not look like there are full coverage in Malaysia yet. Are you sure there are NB-IoT coverage where you tested?
