nRF9160 CUSTOM CONFIGURATION FOR IoT

Hi,

 I am a developer of IoT systems working for a private firm within Africa. I currently started the development of a cellular IoT solution and my search landed me on the Nordic's nRF9160 which is specified with LTE-M and NB-IoT which i find useful for my project. Though i am curious about a few things before i recommend this to the development team as a solution;

1. Is it possible to use a custom IoT instead of nRF Cloud?

2. Does nRF9160 chips come with its IMEI for the SIM?

3. Can i use any LTE 4G enabled SIM instead of iBASIS or HOLOGRAM and the likes?

1. Is it possible to use a custom IoT instead of nRF Cloud?

 You are free to connect to any server on the internet, given that you talk the same protocol.

We do have support for protocol like CoAP, MQTT, HTTP(S) in NCS.

 

2. Does nRF9160 chips come with its IMEI for the SIM?

 IMEI is a unique number for the device (phone, mobile broadband equipment, or in this case; the nRF9160) and is not coupled with the SIM.

IMEI will follow the specific nRF9160, regardless of which SIM is interfaced.

 

Can i use any LTE 4G enabled SIM instead of iBASIS or HOLOGRAM and the likes?

 Yes, as long as your carrier supports LTE Cat M1 or NB-IoT.
