Thingy:91 turns off when Unplugged

I tried to run my Thingy91 off the battery but it shuts off instantly.

My questions is if the battery charging functionality is in the firmware or hardware? Trying to figure out if it's a faulty battery or if I can flash something else on for it to charge then change back and run this version.

I have tried the following:

• Checked battery is connected
• Left the device plugged for a while to charge. I can get serial output so I know the cable is fine

What I have not checked:

• Battery voltage because I don't have the equipment for that

Charging is via HW. 
Remember that the switch has to be set to ON to be able to charge over USB.

I strongly recommend that you get a simple ampere meter so you could check the battery.

Could you try to unplug the battery and see if there could be some soldering issue by the socket?

the device is on. I guess, it must be either a faulty battery or perhaps a worn connection. This project is purely to evaluate a project and I don't need the battery so much. I'll just run it off a powerbank or similar for my purposes.
