nrf9160 how to read a sensor with UART output

Hey all,

So I am a beginner and haven't work with this environment a lot. I use SES to debug and upload application to the nrf9160. I can allready upload some basic application like the blinking led and Hello World. I have a sensor that has a UART output and I would like to read the sensor data through the nrf9160. I put the UART output on P0.10 So the problem is that I have no clue on how to read the sensor data with this board, and what to do with the prj. The sensor wiki link. Are there any expamples to read out sensor data with uart? I know this post is a bit vague, sorry about that.

I made a UART loopback sample earlier for NCS v1.3.0 and the board nrf9160dk_nrf9160ns. Connect P0.21 to P0.19 and P0.18 to P0.17 on the nRF9160DK to enable loopback.

Please tell me if you get this to work, then I can help you with the UART communication with the sensor.

First, thank you for taking the time to response to my cry for help  . So I put your application on the board and it works like a charm. It sends 21 bytes and receives 20 bytes. So do you happen to know what to do next, thanks in advance.

According to the dfrobot A02YYUW documentation you just read the incoming data until you hit 0xFF, and then read the next two bytes (DATA_H and DATA_L) and eventually compute the sum (length) in the following manner: SUM=(Header+Data_H+Data_L)&0x00FF  

Take a look at the code I provided for guidance on how to read UART data. If you are new to this I would recommend you to read up and understand stuff from the bottom up. Read up on the links shown below. It is not necessary to do this in order to achive your goal, but it gives you a better understanding of what you're doing.

• nRF9160 UARTE peripheral
• HAL driver nrf_saadc.h, which is the lowest level of abstraction
• drivers/serial/uart_nrfx_uarte.c
  • This layer will convert from the Zephyr layer to nordic specific functions
• include/drivers/uart.h
  • This is the API you are going to use in your application and is most important for you

Take a look at the figure 1.1. How it works-->The call stack for a better understanding of the different abstraction layers in Zephyr (in that figure a sensor is used on top of the peripheral).

It took some time into understanding your code but it works now thanks for your help.

Happy it helped you. By the way, be aware that there may be flaws with the code I provided. It was written quickly and has not been reviewed or tested by anyone else. But it should give you a general overview of how UART communication works.

A better option to use as a reference may be the Low Power UART sample. Sorry for not pointing you to this sample in the first place.
