nRF91 DK Australian Telstra NB-IOT, internal programming to respond to SMS text message

Im trying to come up with a commercial low power sensor module using the nRF91 DK. What happens if i use my own Telstra SIM card, will it have access to NB-IOT in South Australia? I would like to have the device as low power as possible and without adding an arduino am i able to program the device to receive an SMS, analyse the SMS, check sensors and send a TXT back to the sender?

  • Hi, Red!

Regular cellular plans will in most cases not work with NB-IoT/LTE-M. You should check with Telstra if they provide any dedicated IoT plans, as well as their coverage in South Australia.

We do support SMS on the nRF9160. You can read more about the SMS commands in our AT command reference sheet. SMS support is also up to the cellular provider, so I suggest talking with Telstra about this as well.

Reach out if you have any more questions.

    Best regards,
