Can I use a SIM other than iBASIS with nrfcloud.com and Thingy:91.

I want to use a non-iBASIS SIM with nrfcloud.com and Thingy:91. Is there any way to use non-iBASIS SIM with nrfcloud?

  • Hi,

Yes, you can use SIM cards that are not iBasis with Thingy:91, as long as the SIM card has support for LTE-M and/or NB-IoT. Whether the SIM card is from iBasis or another provider doesn't matter with regards to nRF Cloud. You only need your Thingy:91 to be connected to a LTE-M or NB-IoT network, and to be added in your nRF Cloud account.

  • Hi Marte,

Thanks for the reply, let me have one more question. When I try to add a SIM in nrfcloud, it asks me to add an iBASIS profile, but if I want to test a non iBASIS SIM, do I need to write the Firmware? Do they have a manual on how to set this up for using a non-iBASIS SIM card?

I want to try this time is to see if a sim other than iBASIS works with nrf9160, and I thought Thingy:91 might be an easy way to test communication.

    Thanks,
    Haru

  • Hi Haru,

You don't need to add SIM cards from other providers to nRF Cloud. The reason you have to add the iBasis SIM card is because you have to activate the SIM card before you can use it. It doesn't even have to be added to your account, you can also use iBasis SIM cards that are added to the account of someone else, all it needs is to be activated. The only reason for having the SIM card added to your account (after the activation) is to be able to see how much data is left, and to buy more data.

So if you have a Thingy:91 and a SIM card from another provider, it's enough that the Thingy:91 is added to your nRF Cloud account, so no need to add the SIM card.
