nRF5340 Development Environment

Dear Sirs,

We are currently considering to put nRF5430 SoC in our next generation gaming device. One possibility to develop the firmware for nRF5340 SoC would be to use the nRF Connect SDK. It integrates the Zephyr RTOS, protocol stacks, samples, hardware drivers, and much more.

- I wonder if there is some development environment that does not force the use of Zephyr RTOS?

- Can we use FreeRTOS or bare meta C code in combination with nRF5-SDK?

- Finally, what would be the best approach to port the application from nRF52840 (bare metal C code or FreeRTOS running code) to nRF5340?

Hi Bojan, 

nRF53 is only supported by nRF Connect SDK (NCS). 

In NCS, the SoftDevice Controller is RTOS-agnostic, so you should be able to integrate it with your RTOS of choice. However, it is only a BLE controller, which means that you will have to use a separate BLE host.

In NCS we are using Zephyr's BLE host, which you obviously won't be able to if you are using FreeRTOS instead.
