Equation for 'Online Power Profiler for BLE' Tool

Hi there,

I am looking for the equation that is used in the Online Power Profiler for BLE tool to calculate the average current consumption.

We are selling a BLE device where the customer has the option of configuring the same radio parameters. We provide an app for this and we would like to present the user with an estimated battery life depending on the configuration values they have chosen in the app.

I am aware of this post which details some parts of the equation, however, I think the online calculator has since been updated to include other parameters that are not included here.

The only parameters which the customer can configure are the Tx power and the advertising interval, everything else is set by us. Our design closely follows the Nordic reference design so whichever configuration we chose, the real current consumption closely matches the estimated current consumption by the online calculator.

Thanks,

Sean

  • I agree that estimating battery life accurately requires considering both the advertising event and the idle current between events. Nordic's Online Power Profiler is a useful starting point because it provides an estimate based on the selected radio configuration.

One additional thing worth considering is how you convert average current into expected battery life. Make sure to account for usable battery capacity rather than relying entirely on the nominal rating, as temperature and discharge characteristics can affect the actual result.

For anyone looking for a helpful online resource for everyday calculations, there are also tools available online that simplify different calculation tasks.
