Using the NRF52840 As Host Processor and NRF9160 as an LTE Modem co-processor

Hello,

We're currently evaluating the feasibility for leveraging our existing NRF51840 as host/system processor that runs all of our application code and runs the BLE softDevice, and using the new NRF9160 as an LTE Modem co-processor. Has this type of architecture been done before? Risks? Is it feasible assuming that our RF antenna is good and that we have adequate PCB real estate? Any limitations to this approach?

Hello Sami, 

Yes, this type of application has been done by many before you. Have a look at the Serial LTE Modem (SLM) application which is used to emulate a stand-alone LTE modem on the nRF9160. You could have a look at the Thingy:91 which has a nRF52840 and a nRF9160 on its PCB, along with antenna for both processors.
