nrf5340 dk

Bought 2 nRF5340 DK kits from Mouser.  Followed the setup instructions and fell at the first hurdle. Attached NF antenna, connected to USB and switched on.

Nothing. Green LED came on near the PCA10095 chip but no pulsing LED 1 or any other. Have wasted 4 days searching the documentation and internet to try to find a solution and found nothing of any use at all. So - either I have two defective boards or (more likely) am doing something wrong. Either case is not confidence inspiring - why should I struggle with this when I can develop on my other option from ST which works - even if it is more difficult to set up.

Where do I find anything vaguely useful in resolving the issue of not even being able to get the board connectin wo Windows 10 - complete wate of my time and very disappointing

  • Hi,

Finally got it connected - but I'm afraid the whole experience of trying to do anything with the nRF5340 is just too difficult so I'm reverting back to using ST components and development kits. You website and documentation is all very nicely presented and slick, but unfortunately of no use whatsoever in actually finding out and setting up a dev kit for the first time. You simply get directed round and round - I can't find one single example of how to get something runing end-to-end - not even blinky. Sorry, just too difficult - and if it takes me days and is incredibly frustrating even just to get going I'll simply use something else. So - looks like £90 down the drain for 2 nrf5340 and about a week of wasted effort - I had hoped to find an improvment to ST dev kits - sadly this definitiely isn't it. Lesson learned.

    Best regards

  • Hi Peter,

Feel free to ask us any kind of questions so that we could help you get a better understanding. Sorry again to hear about this experience. Thank you for your feedback so far, I will provide feedback to the responsible teams both regarding the getting started experience in general and also about highlighting the recommended settings for SW9 for the DK.

    Next step

Now, it is great to hear that you got one step further. In case you would like to proceed, and have not tried this yet, a next step would be to run a test and program the Heart Rate Monitor onto your nRF5340 DK.

'nRF Connect SDK', 'nRF Connect for Desktop' and 'nRF5 SDK'

Something that could be confusing when you are new to our products is that there are two different SDK's. The old one, which is still in use, is called 'nRF5 SDK'. The future, however, is the new SDK called 'nRF Connect SDK', sometimes referred to as "NCS". Our new devices, nRF5340 and nRF9160, are only compatible with the 'nRF Connect SDK'.

Please also note that we also have a bucket of useful and necessary development tools which is called 'nRF Connect for Desktop'. This is not the same as 'nRF Connect SDK'. If you have not installed 'nRF Connect for Desktop' yet, links to instructions are found in the getting started guides.

    Getting started with nRF53

Here is a starting point for nRF53: Getting started with nRF Connect SDK (nRF53 Series)(pdf). The same getting started guide is also available as a web page on Infocenter.

The nRF Connect SDK Getting Started guides here on DevZone includes detailed instructions for building applications for the nRF5340 (and nRF9160). Among the tutorials you will find this series, part 0-3:

nRF Connect SDK Tutorial series - Part 0 | NCS v1.4.0

nRF Connect SDK Tutorial - Part 1 | NCS v1.4.0

nRF Connect SDK Tutorial - Part 2 | NCS v1.4.0

nRF Connect SDK Tutorial - Part 3 | NCS v1.4.0

The tutorials are written for NCS v1.4.0. It is fine to go through these tutorials and then upgrade to NCS v1.5.0 afterwords.

    Webinars

An upcoming webinar will be discussing the features and benefits of the nRF Connect SDK: 'Understand the nRF Connect SDK'.

Recordings of previous webinars are also available.

Thanks again for your feedback and please talk to us when things are unclear.

    Best regards,

    Håkon
