Programmatically set device role for Thread node

Hello! 

My issue is about setting the role for a thread device from my program, I'm programming the device using Segger Embedded Studio and the last SDK for Thread and Zigbee.

I want to know if there is a function for setting the device role. I've readed in another entry in this forum about the function otThreadSetRouterRoleEnabled(), but it seems that is no longer supported in recent versions of the SDK.

Hi Morenza,

This is correct. There is a discussion about OpenThead device role in openthread users group. Thread Specification does not currently allow a given device to force itself to become a router. You will find how the role of an OT device is decided from this reply.

Hi Charlie, I have just enter into OpenThread and i have seen that Thread devices are FTD, MTD.

FTD : Router, REED, FED.

MTD : MED, SED, SSED.

i found simple coAP server and client and also MTD coAP client : I can't find how to enable REED, FED and SSED

REED and FED are like router, they are self-assigned. Can you explain what is SSED?

Hi charlie,

I have a doubt that if i want to create the thread network for the battery powered device which means how  do i use router , REED or any. because if i use FTD it will have full power drain. if i want to use MTD then i have to assign all the device to be SED / MED then which is to be router or REED .

and SSED is Synchronized SED
