Sending data from accelerometer to nrfConnect using BLE_UART

Hi all,

Here's the context -

Hardware :

- nrf52840 DK

- sensor - LIS3DH connected via SPI

Software:

- SES

- nrfConnect

I need to send data being captured at 5 kHz to my device. I have broken it down to (i) get data from the sensor(working), (ii) store it temporarily in flash (tbd), (iii) transfer it to the nrfConnect via BLE_UART example( the question).

I have got the BLE_UART and LIS3DH SPI code to merge and working together. Though I am not able to understand how should I send the data that it is receiving on the device to the phone. I did try replacing "ble_nus_data_send(&m_nus, "test data_string", "custom_length", m_conn_handle)" and got kinda satisfactory results.

But when I try to send the sensor data being captured in an int variable, I get stuck as I am not sure how I would pass that data to "data_array" of the uart_event_handle() function.Have included the main.c below.  One consideration is that the sensor raw output is in the range of -1600 to 1600 and I am thinking of passing it like a string and taking care of it in post processing. Suggestions are welcome. Thank you.

  • Hi,

Instead of doing this in the main while-loop, I recommend to use an app_timer (see this tutorial https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/nordic/short-range-guides/b/software-development-kit/posts/application-timer-tutorial ). When you connected to the BLE device (BLE_GAP_EVT_CONNECTED event), you start the timer, and at regular intervals, in the app timeout_handler, you read the sensor register value and send the data over BLE with the ble_nus_data_send() function.

  • Hi , thanks for the suggestion. I am looking at the timer theory but having a hard time understanding how to use it for my case. Meanwhile, I went ahead and wrote the code for capturing 18k data points( about 20 secs of data at 400 Hz sampling rate).

    Current set up :

    - acc_data() function captures the data , and stores it in a array[18k]

    - send that array to fds write, and read it back and store ( still figuring out how to write to multiple pages)

    - send the data over BLE asynchronously.

The pipeline works. This is current issue which does not make sense to me:

    - the while loop which is being used to capture the data is getting completed instantly instead of 20 secs time. My understanding is that there is no feedback to make the loop know the sampling rate of the sensor and what is happening is that the value which the sensor is showing at that instant ( say 980) is being filled with slight variation to all the array indexes.

I noticed that it was not complete garbage but within a certain range though did not make any sense. Have attached the code below again for you to take a look. I don't think nrf.delay() would work as the minimum accurate value would be 10 ms and for 400 Hz I would require 2.5 ms and in future when I do 5 kHz, it will not work too. .
