GPS signal lost in a car with Window cling film

Dear Devzone,

We are testing GPS of our products based on nRF9160.

When we test in one car, the GPS signal is lost when the device is put inside this car. This situation does not happen in other cars. This car seems to have a cling film on windows that can attenuate GPS.

Have you ever seen this case in any of your customers' experiences? And do you have any suggestions on this case?

Thank you and best regards,

Ngoc Nguyen

  • Hi,

After a quick google search I did find multiple car forums where people have complained about bad GPS reception with tinted heat-absorbent windshields or heat-arbsorbent glass, so this seems to be a common problem for GPS signals.

A car will act as a Faraday cage for RF signals, so ideally the GPS antenna should be place outside the car, as you need a clear vision of the sky to make GPS work.

    Best regards,
