I need something in excess of 5mA output drive. Is there likely to be any problem with connecting two or more GPIO pins in parallel(providing I use OUTSET and OUTCLR to ensure they change at the same time)?

Hi,
With high drive strength you are able to drive 5mA from one port, and a total of 15mA from all ports. If you need more than this it is recommended to supply external power. Since the same module is handling high drive strength you can either couple some pins in parallel, or use one pin to drive a maximum of 15mA. See this thread for more information.
