Failure to initialize lwm2m carrier library

While trying to build and run on my nRF9160 DK the  project: asset_tracker , that I imported into SES by selecting: File>nRF Connect SDK Project...(in the SES menu), I followed the required steps however, after building this project and after downloading (programming) it into my connected nRF9160 DK board I was unable to connect to LTE network. 

In the log file of the nRF Connect LTE Link Monitor (copy attached) I noticed the following error message:

"asset_tracker:LWM2M_CARRIER_EVENT_ERROR: code 1, value -116

ASSERTION FAIL [err==0]@WEST_TOPDIR/nrf/lib/bin/lwm2m_carrier/os/lwm2m_carrier.c: 42

Failed to initiate lwm2m carrier library"

As instructed , I completed the following steps to build and run the project: asset_tracker on my nRF9160 DK board:

1. I selected in SEGGER Embedded Studio (SES): File>Open nRF Connect SDK Project...

2. In the SES, I selected: Tools>Options>nRF Connect and I added the following CMake parameter: -DOVERLAY_CONFIG=lwm2m_carrier_overlay.conf

3. I entered the required info like:

-nRF Connect SDK Release (v1.6.1)

-nRF Connect Toolchain Version (v1.6.1)

-I selected the asset_tracker project

-I entered board name as:  nrf9160dk-nrf9160ns

-I accepted the build directory

-I selected (ticked) the "Clean Build Directory" box 

and then I clicked "OK" to import this project (asset_tracker) into SES..

4. From the SES menu I selected: Build>Build Solution in order to build the application.

5. Once the Build was completed I selected from SES menu: Target>Download Zephyr/Merged.hex , in order to program this application into my connected board (nRF9160 DK)

6. After I selected in the SES menu: Target>Download Zephyr/Merged.hex , the following message popped-up:

"! Project out of date. This project 'zephyr/merged.hex' is out of date and needs to be built. Build the project before debugging?  <YES>  <NO>  <Cancel> "

I clicked <YES> and the building process took place for about 15 seconds and then the following 3 messages appeared:

v  Connecting J-Link using USB. Completed.

v  Preparing target for download. Completed.

v  Downloading 'merged.hex' to J-Link. Download successful.

7. I then reset my connected board (nRF9160 DK) and I saw that LED3 on this board started blinking, indicating that an attempt to connect to LTE network was in progress. However, my board could not connect to LTE network for the next 30 minutes and when I analyzed the log file of the nRF Connect LTE Link Monitor (copy attached) I noticed the following error message:

"asset_tracker:LWM2M_CARRIER_EVENT_ERROR: code 1, value -116

N.B.

1. The version of my nRF9160 DK is v 0.8.2.

2. I am using Windows 10 Pro operating system, version: 20H2, OS build: 19042.631

3. I am using nRF Connect v.3.7.0

4. I am using nRF Connect SDK v1.6.1

5. I am trying to build and run the  project: asset_tracker , that I imported into SES by selecting: File>nRF Connect SDK Project...(in the SES menu).

6. I selected the board name: nrf9160dk-nrf9160ns

7. I added the following parameter to to my build command: -DOVERLAY_CONFIG=lwm2m_carrier_overlay.conf   in the SEGGER Embedded Studio (SES) ,after selecting: Tools>Options>nRF Connect (in the SES menu).

8. I was able to connect to LTE network in the past when I used the prebuilt nRF9160:Asset Tracker application but not when I tried to build and program the asset_tracker application using the SEGGER Embedded Studio (SES) IDE and  following the steps listed above.

    I did follow your advice to try and build asset tracker leaving out C.Make parameter: -DOVERLAY_CONFIG=lwm_carrier_overlay.conf  and it did work. I was able to connect to LTE network, although only after a 10 minutes delay from the time I did reset the board.

    So the problem has been solved, thanks for your advice.

    I did run this asset tracker application (that I built using SES) several times and each time it took 10 minutes after resetting the board, before the connection to LTE network was established. This was in contrast to the prebuilt nRF9160:Asset Tracker application, which did establish connection to LTE network within a few seconds after resetting the board , each time I ran this application.

    After analysis of the log file of the nRF Conect LTE Link Monitor (for the asset tracker application that I built using SES and leaving out the CMake parameter), I noticed that:

    1. After 10 minutes from starting the Asset Tracker, a message: "Network connect attempt timed out" was logged.

    2. The above message was followed by another message: "lte_le:Using fallback network mode".

    3. And a few seconds later, the message: "asset_tracker:connected to LTE Network" was logged.  

    4. The connection to LTE Network was also confirmed by LED4 turning permanently ON on my nRF9160 DK board.

    I did search for info on the LTE_USE_FALLBACK and I found that:

    1. The fallback network mode will be used when the selected mode fails.

    2. If LTE-M is selected as the network mode, NB-IoT will be the fallback mode and vice versa.

    I checked which AT commands could be used to check and set the required network mode (which is the NB-IoT network mode in my case) and I found that:

    1. The AT command:  AT%XSYSTEMMODE? can be used to check the selected mode

    2. The AT command:  AT%XSYSTEMMODE=0,1,1,0  can be used to set the NB-IoT network mode.

    Subsequently, I run the asset tracker application that I built using SES and leaving out the CMake parameter, as advised by you and I used the AT%XSYSTEMMODE?  command to check which network mode was used by this application during the first 10 minutes after the reset.

    As expected, I found that this application was using the LTE-M network mode during the first 10 minutes after reset, and only when the fullback network mode (NB-IoT) was activated 10 minutes later, the connection to LTE network was established.

    I must say that I have learned a lot from this exercise.

    Happy to hear that you found the solution. Note that if you are on a NB-IoT network, then you should use either the procompiled FW i.e. img_app_bl\nrf9160dk_asset_tracker_nbiot_2021-06-25_7a076c22.hex or build from NCS project, editing the prj.conf of Asset Tracker to the following:

    CONFIG_LTE_NETWORK_MODE_LTE_M_GPS=n
    CONFIG_LTE_NETWORK_MODE_NBIOT_GPS=y

    As advised, I built the project, editing the prj.conf of Asset Tracker to the following:

    1. CONFIG_LTE_NETWORK_MODE_LTE_M_GPS=n
    2. CONFIG_LTE_NETWORK_MODE_NBIOT_GPS=y

    This resulted in a speedy connection of Asset Tracker application to LTE network.
