Hello, 

The role of the certificates in the nRF9160 is to authenticate the device towards the cloud service. Have a look at the modem key management documentation. Depending on what cloud service used, you will need to follow instructions provided by the cloud service. There are currently two officially supported cloud services in our samples, AWS and Azure, respectively

• nRF9160: AWS FOTA
• nRF9160: Azure FOTA
• nRF9160: Cloud client

For example, AWS provides this documentation on client certificates.
