Thingy 91 not connecting to NB-IoT/LTE-M network

Hi everyone,

I'm trying since a few days to connect the Thingy 91 to the network with any result at all.

This is my configuration:

Modem firmware: V 1.3.0

Application: Asset tracker 

SIM:

1. ibasis

2. things mobile

I activated them both then tried to connect with no result, getting the same beahivior for both.

Setting the device to operate on the LTE-M Network i get no response at all from the modem, I suppose because LTE-M is not yet supported in Italy(?).

With NB-IoT I get the modem trying to register but with no result.

I send those AT Commands on startup to select NB-IoT mode and legacy PCO:

AT+CFUN=4

AT%XSYSTEMMODE=0,1,0,0

AT%XEPCO=0

AT+CFUN=1

This is what i get from the logs, with CNEC_EMM: 13 and CNEC_EMM: 15 error codes for both the SIMs i tried:

I'm not able to figure out if it's a SIM failure on both cases or if I'm missing something on the configuration side.

     Yes, it appears that Italy is NB-IoT only: GSMA coverage map

     Both of those errors point to a subscription/network coverage problem.

    Looking at iBasis's website, it doesn't look like they have any roaming agreements in Italy: iBasis coverage

    And, looking at Things Mobile's webpage, it doesn't look like they support NB-IoT: Things Mobile coverage

    Missing roaming agreements and NB-IoT coverage would explain the errors you got.

    So, it looks like you need to get a new SIM card. I've looked at Arkessa's coverage (our other connectivity partner) , and they should support NB-IoT in Italy.

    Or, you could try to contact Telecom Italia or Vodafone, as they are the ones that has NB-IoT coverage in Italy according to GSMA.
