GPS fix problem, satellites available

Hi,

We are using the GPS xample for the nRF9160. and are struggling a little with getting the GPS fix.

$GPGGA,001932.00,,,,,0,,99.99,,M,,M,,*6F
$GPGLL,,,,,001932.00,V,N*43
$GPGSA,A,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,99.99,99.99,99.99,1*2D
$GPGSV,2,1,6,14,,,27,17,,,30,19,,,27,24,,,22,1*5F
$GPGSV,2,2,6,28,,,27,29,,,25,1*51
$GPRMC,001932.00,V,,,,,,,060180,,,N,V*01

SNR is arount 28 in average, 4-7 satellites.  But the modem is never able to get a fix, never starting to use any satellites.

I have seen some posts arount this forum mentioning the very same problem, some mentioning the modem firmware.

Is that problem with the modem firmware real?  or is it just the antenna conditions that is tpreventing the fix?

  • Hello Viggo,

SNR 28 dB is not a very good number, it should normally be around 40 or even better. Are you running the GPS sample on a custom board? Are your trying to get a fix indoors or where is the device located?

Is that problem with the modem firmware real?  or is it just the antenna conditions that is tpreventing the fix?

I assume that the modem firmware should not be the problem here, but just to make sure: what modem firmware version are you using? To me, this sounds more like an antenna (configuration) or environment issue.

    Regards,

    Markus

  • I interpret that as you do not have any issues pending on this on the Modem fimware regarding this. I am using version 1.3.0 at the moment.

Will continue to look into the antenna performance :-)

No, we currently do not have any known issues related to GPS performance with mfw 1.3.0.
