How to add the external/protothread module and peripheral/[drivers/nefx] modules to the Mesh application? (based on Mesh 5.0, nrf5 Sdk, 17.0.2)

I recently answered a similar question here: https://devzone.nordicsemi.com/f/nordic-q-a/79719/adding-i2c-communication-in-mesh-project. Another tip: it can be a bit tedious to add many source files through the UI if you are using an IDE such as Segger Embedded studio. I find it easier to *emProject file in a text editor and simply add the source paths directly:
