NRF9160 VDD_GPIO damage

Hello Nordic team, 

I have a nrf9160 powered from a 3.8v bench supply. 

I also have a usb to uart cable , with uart wires going into NRF9160. Usb side, plugged into my computer.

During my testing, I powered off the NRF9160, while keeping the usb to uart cable plugged in to my computer

My NRF9160 is now dead, cannot jtag into it. I also gets hot when plugged in. 

Is it possible to permanently damage the NRF9160 by the steps I described above?

    When you power down the module and have a logic high level on one of the GPIOs, you will back power the device via the GPIO. It's meant for this so is possible that this can damage the module. Max voltage on a GPIO is VDD+0.3 V. So when VDD is 0 V, max voltage is only 0.3 V.
