Problems with buttonless DFU

  • Hi, I'm having trouble implementing DFU buttonless.

  • I ran the tutorial step by step in the following link: https://www.u-blox.com/sites/default/files/Add-NordicSemiconductorDFU-to-SDKexample_AppNote_UBX-19050198.pdf

    Hardware: nRF52840
    Softdevice: S140
    SDK: 17.1.0

  • The example using DFU with buttons, to restart the device and enter bootload mode by enabling DFUtarg, works perfectly, but I would like to perform DFU Buttonless.

  • Following the tutorial, I enabled the DFU feature without buttons for the UART application present in the examples. I did the entire procedure for generating public and private keys, made the necessary changes to sdk_config, memory settings, etc.
I'm running DFU through nRF Connect on IOS. It works fine when the device is in bootloader (DFUTarg), but I can't get the device to bootloader without using the respective button.
  • So I decided to use the example template, described in this link: https://infocenter.nordicsemi.com/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.nordic.infocenter.sdk5.v15.3.0%2Fble_sdk_app_buttonless_dfu.html&cp=5_1_4_2_2_6 I sent it to the device, using the correct procedure, nRFUtil, I can find and connect but the DFU remains disabled, and I don't have a service to make it go into DFU, unless I press the button and restart the device, causing it to go back to the bootloader and be recognized as DFUTarg having then DFU enabled. Below is an image of the features and services presented through the buttonless DFU template, I get an identical result for the application developed through the Ublox tutorial.

  • The main code developed during the tutorial, which includes the UART application with the addition of the DFU Buttonless service, can be seen below.

  • From the tutorials, to enter DFU, we should send 0x01, in a service for the module to restart and enter the bootloader, I tried to do this through the only available field "Client Characteristic Configuration" but I don't get success, and I believe the service where should send this value is not this. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I'm going wrong or what I should do differently? Thank you very much

  • Thanks for the reply Amanda. The walkthrough that I performed before is perfectly aligned with the post you recommended. Checking this I started looking for other possible solutions.

Apparently everything was ok with my application, and my problem was related to the Iphone cache, after restarting the phone I got the expected results.

Anyone who is getting results similar to mine, even using the buttonless_dfu template in the examples, and using nRF Connect with IOS, I recommend trying to clear the iPhone's Bluetooth cache.

Taking advantage of the topic, is it possible to change the default value to be sent (0x01) so that the device enters DFU mode? I would like to send some other code to be defined internally. If so, do you have any examples of how I can do this?
