nRF Connect for VS Code (Linux): Could not find any connected boards

VS Code (running on Ubuntu 21.10) can't find the connected nRF52840 dev kit. "Could not find any connected boards" is all that's shown under CONNECTED DEVICES. Beside that, the following error is shown:

Error running command nrf-connect.refreshDevicesView: Running the contributed command: 'nrf-connect.refreshDevicesView' failed.. This is likely caused by the extension that contributes nrf-connect.refreshDevicesView.

Any ideas how to fix this are welcome...
