Can the nRF51822 work as a standalone Bluetooth chip / CPU?

I am looking through the following mBed development platforms. I am looking to integrate some mbed code into a production design. I am looking at which platform to export my work too. These platforms seem to usually have another chip on them, is this because the nRF51822 cannot perform all those functions, or is it the mBed programming interface etc.

The other chip is usually for the USB connection/debugger etc. The nrf51822 has all you need for the bluetooth piece.
