NCS: The selected device "NRF52832_XXAA_REV2" is unknown to this version of the J-Link software.

In VS Code, when pushing the "Connect To RTT In nRF Terminal" button, a message shows up: 

J-Link V7.20 Device Selection
The selected device "NRF52832_XXAA_REV2" is unknown to this version of the J-Link software.
 
Please make sure that at least the core J-Link shall connect to, is selected.  
Proper device selection is required to use the J-Link internal flash loaders.
for flash download or unlimited flash breakpoints.
 
For some devices which require a special handling, selection of the correct device is important.

Clicking the dialogs OK button opens a window to select a device/manufacturer/core, however, choosing NRF52832_XXAA has no effect neither.
 
The strange thing is that it used to work until two days ago. Also, programming the device and debugging both work, it's just the nrf terminal that seems to be broken.
 
Happens on:

• Ubuntu 2021 (latest update from a few days ago - which I believe could be related to).
• J-Link 7.20
• NCS 1.7.1
• nRF Connect Extension Pack from 9/21/2021
• VS Code 1.62.3     

Do you have any ideas what could be wrong here or how to fix it?

Any progress in this? The same has occured for me on Windows. RTT connection from VS Code worked perfectly before an update occured, now i have to select the nrf52840 eact time in J-link when connecting to RTT.

My only suggestion (at the moment) is to uninstall any old j-link you may have and install the latest from nrf command line tools again and see if that helps. It's been seen a few times internally also, but seems to occur more sporadic than consistent (e.g. it goes away after choosing device and clicking 'OK'). Let me know if you have any more findings. I will try to ask a bit internally also.

thanks for your help, and all the best 2022.

Installing different versions of j-link didn't had any effect. Oddly enough, j-link is working fine when debugging, it's just the NRF Terminal that's broken. Btw. it's not a sporadic thing - its consistent since about a month, so any ideas how to fix this are welcome.

Does using the J-link RTT Viewer work?

Sure it works, you manually have to select target device. What worked nicely before in the nRF Terminal RTT was the autodetection of the target device with the name "nrf52840_xxAA" and not "NRF52840_xxAA_REV2" which is an unknown target for J-Link.

It looks like they have a fix, but next release is Mid February, so hopefully you can use the J-Link RTT viewer for now.
