Connecting Thingy91 to NRF Cloud using 4G/LTE (No NB-IoT or LTE-M available)

Hi There

Is it possible to connect to nRF Cloud using a normal 4G/LTE Sim? I see the specs of the NRF9160 show that it supports full LTE and all the Bx bands.

If the answer is no is this related to the NRF cloud platform only supporting NB-IoT and LTE-M? Whereas the hardware itself supports 4G/LTE?

Warmest Regards

  • Hi Peter,

As you expected, the answer is no. They have different requirements on both hardware and software(especially modem firmware of the communication protocol stack implementation) defined by their specifications.

The source of the differences is that Celluar IoT and 4G LTE are designed for two kinds of applications with almost opposite requirements. They may share some common technology, but in general, it is not worth supporting both of them on one device.

NB-IoT and LTE-M are both Cellular IoT technology targeted to low-power, low-speed, low-cost applications, so they are easy to be supported on one device.

    Best regards,

    Charlie
