thingy 52 be location tracker

Good day everyone !

Can thingy 52 itself be used as a location tracker, from Received Signal Strength Indicator(RSSI) . Does it have this function ? If it does, may i check is there any example for this ?

Thank you so much!!!

  • Hi,

Sorry for providing the link. I didn't realize it was private. It just says that the RSSI is dependent on the radiated field strength.

The gain of an antenna depends on the near field characteristics of the antenna which is very susceptible to changes when introduced to obstacles, like a hand, a table, etc. You should control the antenna characteristics of both the transmitter and the receiver if you want precise RSSI measurements. And hence RSSI measurements are generally not used for location tracking.

As for using SES for Thingy52, the Thingy52 is a complete package in itself. It has it's own Firmware already within it. The Thingy is to be mounted on any surface of measurement and using your nRFConnect mobile app, the computer or other BLE devices, you can subscribe to the various data available from the Thingy.

If you wish to process the data obtained from the Thingy, i.e if you wish to talk to Thingy, you can use a platform like Raspberry Pi or BlueZ and with some scripts. I guess you could use SES for this.

You could try googling for any examples on processing the Thingy data. But if you wish to erase the current FW on the Thingy and put your own FW (which would not make much sense as the purpose of the Thingy is lost and you can use any DK for this) you will have to do a Hardreset.

    Kind Regards,

    Priyanka
