Setting up in VS Code

After some advice here,

Typically I use the native or recommended IDE's for the platform I'm working with and generally have no issues getting up and running.

This time around I'm wanting to learn to use the VS Code environment for embedded dev and learn how to use make files to actually build  a project and generate a hex, This is proving to be somewhat tricky so was wondering if anyone else has succeeded in this using the nRF5 SDK

I'm using the PCA10040 board.

I would suggest you use nRF Connect SDK for VS Code. See https://nrfconnect.github.io/vscode-nrf-connect/ and https://nrfconnect.github.io/vscode-nrf-connect/connect/build_app.html

For nRF5 SDK, it only supported SEGGER. See the SDK Release Notes

The following toolchains/devices have been used for testing and verification:
 
 - ARM: MDK-ARM version 5.25   
 - GCC: GCC ARM Embedded 9.2020-q2.major
 - IAR: IAR Workbench 7.80.4
 - SES: SES 5.42a
