nRF Connect for Desktop: White screen whenever I open an APP (eg Programmer) (on Mac OS High Sierra 10.13.5)

Hi there,

As the title says, I only get an all white window whenever I open an app in nRF Connect for Desktop (this happens for all apps).

If I try to reload the window the application crashes.

If I toggle the developer tools, I get the message: "DevTools was disconnected from the page. Once page is reloaded, DevTools will automatically reconnect." (see screenshot below).

I've installed/am using:

  • nRF Connect for Desktop v.3.11.0
  • nRF command line tools 10.15.4
  • J-Link V7.58b

I'm on a MacBook Pro from mid 2014 running MacOS High Sierra 10.13.5

I've tried:

  • reinstalling everything
  • using older versions of nRF Connect with varying degrees of succes (or rather failure):
    • 3.7.1 can’t launch the Programmer app (which is the app that I want to use) (version 2.3.3)
    • 3.8, 3.9 crash when trying to add hex file (in the Programmer app)
    • 3.9.1 through 3.10 don't even open (they are stuck on the Nordic splash screen before having the option to choose an app)
    • 3.11 white window problem as described above

Any help is greatly appreciated!

best,

Lukas

  • Hi,

This is unfortunately a known issue on macOS 10.13, but the message from our developers is that tools are supported on the last stable version of an OS, so unfortunately we cannot guarantee that it will work on older versions. The oldest version of macOS supported in the later versions of nRF Connect for Desktop is 10.15.

There were also some issues with the Programmer in nRF Connect for Desktop 3.8, but you can downgrade to 3.7. When doing this you must also install app versions compatible with 3.7:

    1. Download the latest 3.7 version of nRF Connect for Desktop from https://www.nordicsemi.com/Products/Development-tools/nRF-Connect-for-desktop/Download?lang=en#infotabs (for macOS this is 3.7.2).
    2. After starting nRF Connect for Desktop 3.7 a prompt will come up about upgrading. Click “No” on this.
    3. In the Settings, click on “Add source”, enter the URL http://developer.nordicsemi.com/.pc-tools/nrfconnect-apps/3.7-apps/apps.json and click “Add”.
    4. Back in the list of all apps, all apps should show up twice now, one with “official” below them and one with “3.7 compatible apps” below them. If you want to hide the incompatible versions, click on “Filter” and deselect “Official”.
    5. Install the apps you need in the old versions and use them.

    Best regards,

    Marte
