Dfu Error "Unable to write Op Code 3 (error 133)"

Hi,

I have a custom board with nRF52840/SDK 16/Softdevice 7.3.0 using Secure Dfu Bootloader. On my Android device I use Nordic Dfu Library. I have tried all available Dfu lib versions from 1.11.0 to 2.0.2.
I've had Dfu up and running for a few months and it has been working fine for most Android devices I have tested so far. However I just recently bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab A8/Android 11 and the Dfu does not work on this device returning the error 'Unable to write Op Code 3 (error 133)'. Below I will show logs from Android Studio logcat and also from my Peripheral custom board for case 1 (Samsung Galaxy Tab A8/Android 11 ) where Dfu fails and case 2 (Samsung Galaxy S20 FE/Android 12) where Dfu succeeds. I also provide the relevant app code section I use for Dfu. In the app code I have tried different settings, for example setting the PRN value to 1 and increasing the 'preparDataObjectDelay' up to 400.
I am grateful for any tip.

// For DFU bootloaders from SDK 15 and 16 it may be required to add a delay before sending each

// packets being dropped and more reliable transfer. Detection of packets being lost would cause
// automatic switch to PRN = 1, making the DFU very slow (but reliable).
starter.setPrepareDataObjectDelay(300L);

// Init packet is required by Bootloader/DFU from SDK 7.0+ if HEX or BIN file is given above.
// In case of a ZIP file, the init packet (a DAT file) must be included inside the ZIP file.
Uri mFileStreamUri = Uri.fromFile(new File(filePath));

starter.setZip(mFileStreamUri, filePath);
controller = starter.start(getApplicationContext(), DfuService.class);
// You may use the controller to pause, resume or abort the DFU process.

  • Hi Einar,
    I have tried Dfu from nRF Connect Mobile on my Samsung A8 Tablet and it is failing too with Error 133, please see attached screenshot.

    On my Nokia T20 tablet I get Gatt Connection Timeout, Error when trying Dfu from nRF Connect Mobile.

    I have now checked the actual chipset on the devices where Dfu does not work and on the devices where Dfu works.
    My app code and target code are identical when testing Dfu on all devices below.

    1. Chipsets on devices where Dfu does not work:
    Samsung A8 Tablet: Unisoc Tiger T618
    Nokia T20 Tablet: Unisoc T610

    2. Chipsets on devices where Dfu works:
    Samsung A71: Exynos 980 or Qualcomm SDM730 Snapdragon 730
    Samsung S9: Exynos 9810
    Samsung S20: FE: Exynos 990 (7 nm+) - Version 1
    Huawei P10: Kirin 960
    Samsung Galaxy S7: Exynos 8890 Octa (14 nm)
    HTC Nexus N9 Tablet: Nvidia Tegra K1

    So that indicates that there could be a problem when running the app on devices with Unisoc chipsets.

    For the Android devices where Dfu does not work, I can make other Ble transactions from my app without problem. It is just the Dfu that is not working.

  • Hi,

    That is interesting. I have not been able to get a hold of any Unisoc Tiger T618 or Unisoc Tiger T610 devices so I have not been able to test myself, but I wonder if you can make a sniffer trace? Can you also make a sniffer trace of the exact same operation using one of the working devices for comparison?
