Verizon IMEI Registration for nRF9160

I'm new at this (so be gentle). Trying to understand the process for activating a SIM card with Verizon using the NRF9160. I see that this modem is approved; so do I only need to request that the IMEIs for the modem(s) be registered through/by Nordic with Verizon?

If so, is there an API we can use to make the registration a bit more automated? Having to send an email every time we source new modems doesn't work well with high volume production.

We will likely use Hologram SIM cards. Does Hologram register with Verizon directly or would we still need to take care of this for the SIMs to work with Verizon?

Please feel free to correct any verbiage or point out a fundamental misunderstanding of this process. Again, this is all new to me so I won't take offence if my questions are less than smart.

Thanks

  • Hello,

I'm new at this (so be gentle)

No worries, the process of starting with cellular product can be a little overwhelming in the start. Lots of new terminology to learn.

Are you aiming to certify your product with Verizon, if so there are certain steps to take. Customers must register company with VzW, and sign an NDA with VzW before starting this certification process. Please contact the Verizon sales team in order to start that process. Afterwards, you will need to use the certified modem firmware and nRF Connect SDK in your product as described in Mobile network operator certifications

We will likely use Hologram SIM cards.

This should not cause any issues, as long as your not certifying your device with Verizon. The device should connect to network without any special operation. However, you should ensure that Verizon allows Hologram SIM to roam on their network.

If you are aiming for Verizon certification, please sign the NDA with Verizon and then contact your local RSM for Nordic Semiconductor. If you do not have the contact information for this person, please send me an IM and will provide this information to you.

    Kind regards,
    Øyvind

  • We don't plan on certifying our device with Verizon. It sounds like it's actually easier to set this up if we don't so I have to ask, what are the benefits of registering our device with Verizon?

I'm afraid I'm not able to provide a good answer to that question. Please contact your local Verizon sales office or our local RSM.

    Kind regards,
