Need to test USB communication with nRF52840 EVK

My device and Software details are as below

nRF52840 EVK

Softdevice:s140

SDK v16

I am new to BT and USB protocols. 

As part of our POC I eed to test and establish the USB communication with nRF52840 module.

I want to know the initial steps to understand and verify the USB communication with the EVK.

Hi,

nRF5 SDK v16 is quite old. However, I would not suggest that you upgrade to a newer version of nRF5, but rather consider using nRF Connect SDK (NCS) instead of nRF5 SDK. 

Regarding USB communication, you could try out existing NCS v2.0.0 Zephyr samples located in \2.0.0\zephyr\samples\subsys\usb.

Thank you for the response. But we are using SDKv16 for some other use case. Now we need to use the same SDK for testing USB. My query is complete steps to bringUP USB and test it on nRF52840 board. Not able to understand which examples of SDKv16 i need to use to test. Further we need to bring up SPI and UART also

Hi,

There are many hardware peripheral examples including USB examples (USB HID example and USB BLE UART example), UART example, SPI master example and SPI slave example.

 I think J3 is the connector for USB communication. I want to use this for basic data communication.

Connect USB here to Laptop and test the USB data transfer. For this I want to know the best example to use.  Shal use this:infocenter.nordicsemi.com/index.jsp

USB samples that I mentioned previously may be a good starting point. Additionally, you may want to look at USB Device example.

We have another query. As you mentioned before for nRF52840 EVK SDK 16 is older one and also suggested to use NCS.

the info we need is : what is the main difference between nRF5SDk and NCS.

Also what are the latest standard versions we need to use for these things.

My board is pca10056. If I am using nRF5SDK what is the softdevice I should use?

Hi,

You can find more information about nRF5 SDK and NCS in nRF5 and NCS statement.
Your current board PCA10056 can be used for development of both nRF5 (Softdevice) and NCS (SoftDevice Controller) projects.

Thank you for the info. THe link provided is helpful for us. We decided to go with NCS as we need some OS to be there. My query here is Looks like VS code is manadatory for using the NCS projects and Segger we can not use?. Can you clarify this.

Hi,

Segger Embedded Studio (SES) is not supported anymore starting from NCS v2.0.0. Previous versions of NCS supported SES and it could be opened from the Toolchain Manager. However, it is recommended that you use newest version of NCS, and nRF Connect extension for VS Code. More information about NCS is available in the documentation.
