External oscillator for NRF52833

We would like to use an external oscillator instead of External crystal. Is it possible to use external oscillator? If yes to which pin it should the clock be connected ? is any additional hardware connection or register configuration needed for using the same?

  • Hi,

Yes, the hardware supports it but out Softdevices doe not support it.

    The product specification states:

The following external clock sources are supported:

    • Low swing clock signal applied to the XL1 pin. The XL2 pin shall then be grounded.
    • Rail-to-rail clock signal applied to the XL1 pin. The XL2 pin shall then be grounded or left unconnected.

It's probably ok to use external 32 kHz oscillator if you're not going to use the Softdevice. Also, this thread is recommended reading, it's about the 32 MHz clock but many of the points is also relevant for the 32 kHz clock.

    regards
