PCB layer

Hi,

I do have a question about PCB layers. I did read it is better to use a minimum of 2 layer PCB, but why is this? By example is a single layer also OK?

I'm trying to learn everything about it. So sorry if it is a stupid question.

Br,

  • Hello,

    Thanks for your question.

Ground plane is important as it is the reference of the system. The antenna is a significant part of the PCB board, and the impedance of antenna should be 50 ohms with respect to the ground. The ground plane acts as counterweight for the antenna, so less ground in the outer layers will make antenna less efficient. The larger the ground plane the less risk to face noise as there should be return path for noise under the matching network of the bottom layer of PCB. The two ground planes should be connected using a lot of via holes.

You can look at devzone cases on this link (+) Search - Nordic DevZone (nordicsemi.com) regarding PCB design (ground plane, antenna placing etc).

    Thanks.

Feel free to ask if you have more queries.

    Best Regards,
